$40 Million Settlement for Kansas City Life Insurance Policyholders
A $40 million settlement has been reached on behalf of Kansas City Life Insurance Co. policyholders, the result of extensive efforts by Schirger Feierabend LLC and co-counsel Stueve Siegel Hanson LLP in lawsuits from coast to coast alleging cost-of-insurance overcharges on the part of Kansas City Life Insurance Company. The case is Peter van Zanten vs. Kansas City Life Insurance Company and was filed in February 2025 in the United States District Court for the Western District of Missouri on behalf of Peter van Zanten and other individuals who own or owned certain universal life and variable universal life insurance policies.
Prior to this settlement, Schirger Feierabend and Stueve Siegel Hanson tried and won three class action cases against Kansas City Life, resulting in awards of approximately $48 million (jury verdict/awarded prejudgment interest) (David Karr vs. Kansas City Life Ins. Co.); $1 million (jury verdict) (Christopher Meek vs. Kansas City Life Ins. Co.); and $6 million (more than $4 million jury verdict and more than $2 million prejudgment interest awarded by the court) (Gregory Sheldon vs. Kansas City Life Ins. Co.).
The case is one of several cases across the country being prosecuted by Schirger Feierabend LLC against life insurance companies for overcharging universal life insurance policyholders.
